Support your Hospice by taking part in the Cross Bay Walk. Walkers will be able to experience the thrill of tackling one of the region’s most beautiful walks, whilst raising money to support people across Burnley and Pendle when they need it the most.
Registration costs £15 for adults, £10 for children and £5 for dogs. This will include a free t-shirt for adults and children and a free bandana for your dogs.
Join with your family, friends, or even on your own - everyone is welcome!
The walk is from Arnside to Kent’s Bank railway station and is around 8 miles long. Adults must be prepared to carry children (and dogs!) when they are tired and when water may be too deep for them to cross. The terrain is unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Walkers are asked to arrange their own transport at the end of the walk.
Once you have registered it is time to fundraise!
The registration fee covers the cost of the event and any additional sponsorship raised goes directly towards the vital care provided by the Hospice. We ask each family to raise an additional sponsorship of £100 to help us to continue supporting those in our local community! You will receive a sponsorship pack to help you with your fundraising.
A great way of raising donations is to set up a JustGiving page or a Facebook fundraising page.
One of the easiest ways to raise sponsorship is to start your own JustGiving page in aid of Pendleside Hospice and share the link with your friends and family so they can sponsor you to complete the walk and make donations to support your cause.
Facebook is a fantastic way to raise money, you just start the fundraiser in aid of the Hospice and share it with your friends… It is really that easy!
Just make sure that you include Cross Bay Walk in the title so we can keep track of your fundraising page!
Don’t worry if technology isn’t for you, you can use our sponsorship form to collect cash donations. You will receive this in your sponsorship pack.
Getting to and from Arnside- Kents Bank:
There is a train which runs every hour and costs just a couple of pounds. You can either drive to Kents bank, or take the train to Arnside where we start (so that their car is at the finishing point), or do the reserve and catch the train back to your car at Arnside. Alternatively, if you are walking as part of a group you could leave a car at each point.
What to expect:
The art of walking successfully across Morecambe Bay is to be prepared for a few eventualities.
Changeable weather and a varying terrain will be encountered. First and foremost you should be able to walk 7 miles.
Underfoot, Arnside to the shore includes sand, footpaths, lanes and marshland. The bulk of the crossing is flat sand often rippled and sometimes covered in water. Half way across you will navigate the Kent River where you can expect an average depth of up to 2ft (60cm) for a distance of some 50m. The final leg of the walk is over marsh to Kent’s Bank station; this is a clear pathway but may sometimes be slippery.
What to carry:
- Personal medication, including blister relief
- Charged mobile phone
- Sun cream (sand, sun and sea can be a fierce combination)
- Liquid refreshment. There are no toilets on the crossing, so consider your needs.
- Energy snacks/lunch
- A hat (a peak will protect your eyes)
- Sunglasses, if appropriate
- Breathable lightweight clothing, a waterproof and a few extra layers if you feel the cold
