Pendleside Hospice is celebrating the successful opening of its 10th charity shop following a fantastic launch day at its brand-new store in Burnley town centre.
The new shop, located in Charter Walk Shopping Centre, officially opened its doors on Saturday 6th June, with hundreds of shoppers turning out to support the Hospice's latest retail venture.
The official opening was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the Mayor of Burnley. Burnley MP, Oliver Ryan, also attended the special occasion as a guest, showing his support for Pendleside Hospice and its vital work within the local community.
The community turned out in full force for the opening, with people queuing before 10am to be among the first through the doors. The shop remained busy throughout the day, welcoming a constant stream of customers eager to support their local Hospice.
The opening day proved to be a huge success, with more than 200 items sold and the shop generating four times its average daily income. Adding to the celebrations, visitors enjoyed the chance to spin the wheel for discounts in store and meet Pendleside's much-loved mascot, Penny.
The new Burnley shop offers shoppers the opportunity to browse a wide selection of quality pre-loved clothing, accessories, books and unique finds, all while supporting local Hospice care.
Louisa Mayor, Head of Income Generation at Pendleside Hospice, said: “We would like to thank everyone who attended the opening, donated items, volunteered their time, or made a purchase. The overwhelming support from the community made the day truly special and underlined the strength of local commitment to hospice care.
“Our retail shops play a crucial role in funding the services we provide. Every item donated and every purchase made contributes directly to the care of patients and support for families facing some of life’s most challenging moments. As demand for hospice services continues to grow, income generated through our shops is more important than ever in ensuring we can continue to deliver compassionate, high-quality care.”
As Pendleside's 10th shop, the new Burnley store represents a significant achievement for the Hospice's retail team and demonstrates the continued support shown by local people across Burnley and Pendle. Pendleside Hospice also operates shops in Colne, Nelson, Barnoldswick, Earby and Padiham, with plans to open an additional shop later this year.
Pendleside Hospice currently needs £6.8 million each year to continue delivering its services, with £5.4 million needing to be raised through fundraising activities, donations, events and its network of charity shops.
Retail income plays a vital role in helping fund patient care. Last year alone, the retail operation generated £950,984 in income, contributing a surplus of £365,086 towards specialist care and support for local patients and their families.
The Hospice is also encouraging the community to continue supporting its shops by donating good quality pre-loved items. Donations can be dropped off at any Pendleside Hospice shop, as well as at the on-site Donation Centre.
With plans to expand its retail network further during 2026, Pendleside Hospice is also looking to recruit more volunteers to support its growing number of shops, particularly across its Burnley stores.
A variety of retail volunteering opportunities are available, offering people the chance to gain new skills, meet new people and make a meaningful difference to local patient care.
