Little Hospice Heroes gear up for 2018 challenge

Hundreds of children are gearing up to take on a three-mile walk to raise funds for Pendleside Hospice.

The 5th annual Little Hospice Heroes walk, which takes place at Towneley Park in Burnley on Sunday 5th August, is for children aged 14-years old or under, who must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the event (accompanying adults take part free of charge).

The walk, which this year will be followed by a teddy bears picnic, takes between 45 minutes to an hour and a half to complete depending on how old the child is and how fast they walk.

Before and after the walk there will be various stalls including refreshments, tombola, face painting, hook a duck amongst others. Before the walk each registered child will receive a t-shirt and a goody bag which they will fill with lots of exciting things along the way. On completing the walk they will be rewarded with a well earned medal and a packed lunch.

They will also receive a certificate in the post after the walk when their sponsor money has been handed into the hospice.

Sammi Graham, head of events and fundraising officer at Pendleside Hospice, said: “The idea of Little Hospice Heroes is to encourage community spirit and promote healthy living and exercise for children, while raising funds for the hospice in the process. During the past five years the walk has raised around £85,000.

“It’s set to be an amazing event with a procession of around 300 children taking part. This year we decided to make it a bit different by holding a teddy bears picnic. We want as many children as possible to bring their teddies and a picnic blanket with them and hopefully the sun will be shining so we can enjoy a picnic after the walk.

“Near the marquee area before and after the walk, there will be food concessions, face painting, hook a duck amongst others. We are encouraging groups such as nurseries, schools, holiday and after school clubs, Rainbows, Brownies, Beavers and Cubs etc to get in touch.

“We’d like to thank Lomeshaye Village Day Nursery for sponsoring the event.”

The route is pram and wheel chair friendly, however some areas are quite steep.

The fully marshalled three-mile route will start at 11am with registration opening at 9.30am in our hospice marquee near the playground. Cost is £6 per child, adults and dogs (which must be on a lead) walk for free.  To register go to www.pendleside.org.uk or call 01282 440120.
