Philosophy of care

We believe that hospice care for the people of Burnley and Pendle should extend far beyond the hospice building. Our aim and purpose is to promote the quality of life for each individual and his or her family and carers. We do this by delivering specialist care appropriate to each patient’s needs and family circumstances.

This encompasses a whole range of physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. The hospice offers short-term in-patient stays for symptom control, rehabilitation and respite care for patients who are eighteen years of age or over with cancer or other life-limiting illnesses. If a patient’s condition is stable but such that they cannot return home, alternative arrangements will be made for their on-going care. However, if they have reached the final stage of their illness, they may choose to stay in the hospice for care and support. Patients are admitted under the care of the hospice Medical Director.

The Day Therapy Unit is situated within Pendleside Hospice and aims to provide advice, friendship and nursing care to patients and support to them and their carers. It is available for anyone who is eighteen years of age or over, who lives in the Burnley and Pendle area and who has been diagnosed with cancer or has other palliative care needs. Day Therapy gives the opportunity to socialise in a relaxed atmosphere with others who are in a similar position whilst, at the same time, having access to help and care from a professional nursing team. Staying at home is a reality with Hospice at Home.

This offers nursing and personal care to patients who are eighteen years of age or over, in their own home, to complement existing services. The care is given by qualified nurses and experienced auxiliaries and is delivered according to each patient’s needs and family circumstances.

It offers emotional support to patients and their family and carers, offers a night care service and extends the hospice philosophy of care into the community. The Hospice at Home service has been developed for those who wish to continue to receive care at home and avoid unnecessary admissions to hospital or to the hospice. The service works together with the existing statutory and voluntary services whenever possible. The hospice is a charitable organisation and all care is provided free of charge.
